Our mission is to help end the suffering of animals in Argos-Mykines. This is our local contribution to the broader goal of alleviating animal suffering across all of Greece.
Our History

In 2009, a small group of dedicated volunteers founded the Laiza organisation in response to a dire animal welfare crisis in the Argos area. At that time, there was no animal welfare organisation within the municipal area, and government involvement in animal care or management was entirely absent. Animals were suffering daily, and while a handful of volunteers were doing their best to help, their efforts were far from sufficient. Despite facing many challenging years, we persevered. Against all odds, we managed to establish a small shelter to provide refuge for dogs in need, rehome hundreds of dogs and cats, and launch numerous initiatives aimed at improving animal welfare and reducing the number of stray animals on the streets.
Our Work Today
Every day, our team is actively engaged with both community animals and local residents!

Our primary daily responsibility is caring for the dogs in our small shelter, supported by our dedicated volunteer team. The shelter typically houses around 30 dogs – most are long-term residents waiting for their forever homes, but we always reserve at least two temporary spaces for community dogs that need short-term care. These spaces are vital for neutering street dogs and treating illnesses before returning them to their familiar environment.
Beyond the shelter, we focus on education initiatives, neutering programs for street dogs, assisting pet owners with neutering their animals, and facilitating adoptions of stray animals. We also collaborate with other animal welfare volunteers in the community, such as Care for Community Animals Argos-Mykines, who provide food, veterinary care, and advocacy for animals living in their natural surroundings. Additionally, we represent local animal welfare volunteers on the five-member Animal Welfare Committee of the municipality of Argos-Mykines.
