Our Programs

We run programs and support our local community to improve the welfare of animals. We encourage people to get involved and help make a better life now and into the future for the animals in our community.

‘Sterilise Your Dog!’

With the help of a generous organisation, “Tierfreunde Kalamata” in Luxembourg, we are reducing the number of street dogs by targeting the origin – peoples’ dogs. The majority of street dogs in Greece either come directly from a home, or are the first generation offspring of a dog that came from a home.

We offer to cover 70% of the cost of sterilisation, making it affordable for everyone to be a responsible pet guardian! Please contact us if you would like to sterilise your pet dog.

Care For Community Animals

“Care for Community Animals – Argos-Mykines” is an initiative by local volunteers which focuses solely on caring for animals which live on the street.

It involves feeding, giving water, veterinary care, disease prevention, socialisation, sterilisation, community education and awareness and promotion of suitable animals for adoption. The animals are cared for in-situ, however occasionally need to stay in a shelter or foster space temporarily for recovery from surgery or illness.

Laiza supports this program by providing shelter spaces for recovering dogs and often donating food or paying for veterinary costs that cannot be covered by the municipality.

Schools Education Program

Education is critical to improve animal welfare in our municipality, and Laiza volunteers are onto it!

We visit schools, often in collaboration with the municipality of Argos-Mykines, and present to students two important topics. We discuss responsible pet guardianship, we explain what pet animals need and how to care for them, as well as the importance of never abandoning them.

We also explain about community dogs, how the students can help them, and we teach about dog body language and how to behave politely around dogs – with a goal of humans and dogs living in harmony together.

Street Animal Sterilisation Program

Dog sedated to be sterilised

Many sites in our municipality become overwhelmed with dogs and cats who are repeatedly breeding. This causes a lot of suffering for the animals and a lot of work and chaos in the local area.

Laiza works together with the municipality and local citizens on campaigns at strategic sites where we can reduce this problem but sterilising as many animals as possible. The animals recover in our shelter and are then returned to their regular place to enjoy a more peaceful and healthy life.

Register a Street Dog!

A big step to improving animal welfare in our municipality is recognising every animal as an individual, a sentient creature with thoughts and needs. So we have created a way to showcase the beautiful dogs that call the streets their home in Argos-Mykines, through our street dog map.

You can submit dog information and a photo of local street dogs who are cared for, which helps them to be recognised and also to reassure people that they are cared for.

We can use the information to see if there are neighbourhood dogs that need sterilisation or vet care, and we can help to make arrangements.
